* * * *

Jeffery groaned as he woke, his head pounding while he gently opened his eyes to the bright light shining down above him. What the hell had happened to him? He pushed up gently from the cot he’d been lying on and glanced around. Joey arched an eyebrow at him, though the man didn’t say a word.

Grunting, Jeffery closed his eyes and tried to move. “What the fuck happened?”

“You were knocked out. Don’t worry. It was for your own safety.”

“I seriously fucking doubt that.” He sat up and leaned over the edge of the cot. “Where is everyone?”

“Don’t worry about that. Are you hungry? Kory is eating if you want to join him.”

Yeah. Kory. The bastard elbowed him before he had time to defend himself. Not that he really could. The guy merely looked at his prey and they immediately felt weak. It wouldn’t surprise him one bit if they had some other kind of mystical powers either. Shifters against the humans. It was how it would always be.

“What is your deal with them? Why are they against me and for you?”

Joey chuckled. “Did you really just ask me that? You created a serum to block Alex from shifting, making him less than what he should have been. That was a result of kidnapping him in the first place. Then you do a series of experimental torture on Kory. I have no fucking clue why they like me and not you.”

“So they like you because you’re helping them?”

“I’m not a bastard like you. That’s all you need to know.” Joey pointed to the break room off to the side. “Go get something to eat. Plenty of TV dinners.”

“Sounds delicious.” Jeffery rolled his eyes and stood, feeling woozy from the events that transpired. Hell, he’d been out of it for a while. Doing a quick overview of his pain, he determined that nothing too serious was wrong with him. He was just the victim in the shifters’ game.

He went to the break room and found Kory finishing up his dinner. The wolf didn’t look any more pleased to see him than Joey.

“Is there ever going to be a time when I’m free to do whatever the hell I want? Or am I your slave forever?”

Kory had no expression. The wolf lifted his drink and sipped. “You’re lucky you’re not dead. I’d be thankful instead of bitching.”

Jeffery grabbed the first dinner he found and popped in in the microwave. “Yeah? I could say the same about you, but we both know you don’t feel that way.”

“You and me are different creatures in different circumstances. Don’t even try to compare.”

He dropped the topic and thought about their conversation about the marked wolf. Prior to their knocking him out, he’d let that bit of knowledge go. Their reaction was priceless. They knew what he was talking about and they were now gone. That had to mean something.

“So why aren’t you out with your friends looking for the marked beast?” Jeffery carried his food to the table and sat in front of Kory.
